The older pensive gentleman in the photo above is Alessandro Manzoni, famed 19th-century Italian novelist, the writer of "I promessi sposi", one of Italy's most beloved books. First written in a rough Milanese language (distinct from modern Italian/Tuscan), Manzoni went through great pains to "wash his clothes in Florence's Arno River", or rewrite his text in polished Florentine/Italian.
The elevation of the text made it the cornerstone of the modern Italian language, and we must consider that it is in this the ethos of translation lies: we wash and clean texts to bring their meanings to wider audiences and provide equal understanding.
